RFU Championship side Doncaster Knights and National Three North club Sheffield tigers are proud to announce a new partnership to promote the development of South Yorkshire Rugby.
Doncaster Knights, the most promoted side in English rugby history, have developed on and off the field into one of the most potent sides in the second tier of the game. Having more than held their own competing at this level , a key victory of last season was a home demolition of Leeds Carnegie at Castle Park upsetting the form books.
Sheffield Tigers finished in their highest ever league position in 4th place in North 1 during 2008/09. Having also reached the RFU EDF Energy Intermediate Cup last season The Tigers can class last season’s campaign as a success.
The two sides have come to an agreement over a partnership this season that will allow for the further development of the Knights Elite Academy players, and provide an opportunity for Tigers squad members to train with internationally experienced coaches at the home of the Knights.
The two sides will begin the 2009/10 season working in tandem to not only push on their own campaigns, but to heighten the awareness of the South Yorkshire game by promoting both teams to an enlarged community .
Knights Director of Rugby Lynn Howells made this statement “after meetings with officials of Sheffield Tigers the benefits of working together to promote the game within the county became clear. Sheffield Tigers are a club in it for the long haul, with a sensible development plan who like to play good rugby. A partnership between the two clubs can only benefit”.
Richard Senior, Director of Rugby for Sheffield Tigers had this to say “The development of Sheffield Tigers, and South Yorkshire Rugby can only benefit from this link with Doncaster Knights. Players associated with both clubs can take experience from the link, and I’m happy that discussions have produced the proper outcome”.
Full details of the link up, and what it entails for both clubs as they begin their respective campaigns looking for success, will be released over the coming weeks.
