Tag 2 Twickenham 2009 - Green Top's Rugby Journey

A very special rugby journey.

It all started in January on a very cold afternoon with an inexperienced group of Green Top Year 6 pupils who began to enthusiastically chase a rugby ball around.

4.3.09, Thorne Schools Tournament @ Thornensians Rugby Club - the group now looked like a good squad of tag players – the Thorne and Moorends Pyramid trophy in the bag.

3.6.09, Doncaster Tag Finals @ Keepmoat Stadium – Green Top battled their way through to the top and progressed along with Pheasant Bank (runners-up) to the South Yorkshire final.

10.6.09, South Yorkshire Tag Finals @ Barnsley RFC - the team was hungry for more success.

19.6.09, Yorkshire Tag Finals @ Pontefract Rugby Club - the team was flying - passing, running the ball, finding the spaces – and they became regional finalists heading for Twickenham?!

8.7.09, National Tag Finals @ Rugby School.

The squad was proudly standing on the playing fields of Rugby School, where the game was invented, in their Doncaster Knights kit. They were ready to compete in the national finals and by lunchtime had qualified for the cup round of play-offs with the top two teams going forward to Twickenham.

The games were fast, skilled and tight. Green Top finished third on their pitch leaving them in the top 5 tag teams in the country!

The eventual finalists, St Laurence School and Bourne Westfield School, deserved their day at Twickenham but Green Top Primary School  has every right to feel very proud of their long journey to Rugby School.

A magnificent local, regional and national achievement!

Thanks go to Rachel Campion and Stewart Cullen - Doncaster Knights coaches -  Mr Jackson - Green Top Year 6 teacher - and Mr Potts, Trinity Academy PE HoD who kindly drove the minibus down on the day. Also a big thanks to supportive parents who travelled down and most importantly the squad members as seen on the photos.

Wednesday 10th June saw the Yorkshire Tag Rugby Finals held at Barnsley RFC. This means they will now go through to the Yorkshire finals, to be held on Friday 19th June at Pontefract RFC. It was a very close tournament with the winners from Richard Newman School winning on try difference leaving Green Top in second place. The top 4 schools going through to the Yorkshire finals include:-

We wish all teams the best of luck for the 19th and hopefully will see them get all the way through to the national finals to be held at Twickenham later in the year.

EASTER CAMPS

During the Easter breaks, DIRECT was running their Easter rugby camp, these were separated into 3 different age categories, 8 and under, over 9s to 11, 12 to 15s. Myself and James Murphy were in charge of the under 8s. We split the three days accordingly; the first day was made up of handling in the morning and game sense in the afternoon, the second day consisted of SAQ (Speed Agility Quickness) in the morning followed by attacking and defending, on the final day we did tackle sense in the morning followed by fun games which illustrated all the skills taught throughout the camp.
