In At The Corner - weekly round up 28 January |
| |
Coventry 19 - 24 Bedford Blues
Despite being outscored by three tries to two, Bedford recorded their fourth away win of the season. Wing, Alex Page, got both the Blues’ tries in the first half and fly half, Ben Patson, kicked four penalties and a conversion. Coventry led for a long period in the second half after wing, Kurt Johnson’s score, but eventually succumbed to Patson’s three second half penalties.
Esher 17 - 36 Rotherham Titans
The Titans won for the first time in seven attempts and did so in style, running in six tries. Two tries early in the second half for the Titans from full back, Jon Feeley, and second row, Alex Dunlop, gave the Titans a comfortable advantage that they never looked like losing. Esher’s Doug Flockhart, scored his ninth try of the season as a late consolation for the home side.
Exeter Chiefs 39 - 29 Cornish Pirates
The South West rivals racked up nine tries at Sandy Park in an entertaining encounter. The game turned on two quick fire tries just after the break for the Chiefs. First wing, Josh Drauniniu intercepted to go over from his own half and then skipper Richie Baxter celebrated his 250th league appearance in style when finishing off a Junior Fatiolofa break. For the Pirates, fly half Gareth Steenson scored nineteen points including a brace of tries as they took a try scoring bonus point back to Camborne.
Launceston 17 - 16 Plymouth Albion
A stunning win for Launceston as Albion were outscored by three tries to one. The Cornish All Blacks were 16-7 down at the hour mark, but tries from centre, Ryan Westren, and an injury time score from hooker, Neil Clark got the Cornishmen over the line for just their fourth win of the season.
Newbury 22 - 24 Moseley
Moseley moved up a place to thirteenth after second row, Paul Arnold’s late try, meant the visitors took the spoils at Monks Lane. Newbury led for all but six minutes of the match after an early Chris Ashwin penalty and a double from wing Martin Nutt helped establish a decent lead. Moseley hung in there and never let Newbury get more than eight ahead and recorded their third away win in their last four games on the road.
Northampton Saints 96 - 3 Sedgley Park
Wow! This one has to hurt for Park as the three teams below them at the bottom all won as they shipped an incredible fourteen tries. Try machine, Chris Ashton, ran in four tries to take his season’s tally to twenty-five, but even he was outdone by his wing partner, Paul Diggin, who scored five tries. To rub it in, skipper, Bruce Reihana, only missed one conversion all afternoon as well as helping himself to a couple of tries.
Nottingham 34 - 6 London Welsh
Nottingham returned to winning ways with three late tries adding a little gloss to the scoreline. Prop, Nigel Hall, notched his eighth try of the season for the home side and flanker, Luke Sheriff, also found his way onto the scoresheet for the eleventh time this season. Wing, Joshua Kay weighed in with two tries whilst the Exiles could only muster two penalties.
Pertemps Bees 22 - 20 Doncaster Knights
The Bees produced the biggest shock of the weekend, and possibly the season, with this two point win over the Knights. The Knights arrived at Sharmans Cross Road in third place and went 12-0 up after nine minutes. The Bees belied their lowly league position to claw their way back into the contest, and then lead, through two tries from flanker, Will Matthews, and one from scrum half, Nick Griffiths. Paul Bailey’s late try for the Knights wasn’t converted and the Bees held on for the final twelve minutes for a sensational win.
