Ben Gollings

Doncaster Knights have signed 26 year fly half Ben Gollings.

Born in Cornwall, his professional rugby career in the Premiership was with Harlequins, Newcastle Falcons and Worcester before he moved to Australia two years ago to play with Sunnybank; and this past year in New Zealand playing Provincial rugby for Tasman. He was in the frame to get a Super 14 contract with the Crusaders as understudy to Daniel Carter but when that fell through decided to return to the UK.

Gollings is best known for his part in England’s recent Seven a Side team and is currently the highest ever points scorer in the iRB Sevens series, with 1517 points to his name including 137 tries. He is committed to travelling to the next rounds in Dubai and South Africa on the first two weekends of December but has decided to end his Sevens career at that point and concentrate on the 15 a side game at Castle Park. There has been a touch of the “boots in a suitcase” about Gollings' rugby life. He doesn't want that to continue, and relishes the thought of settling in one place, he recently told the New Zealand Herald.

It has been no secret that Clive Griffiths has been on the lookout for another top quality fly half and Gollings certainly fits that bill; but with his pace and handling skills can play anywhere in the backs, giving plenty of options to the match day squad.

Griffiths said that “Ben is a terrific acquisition. He has pace to burn as well as all the skills to give our backs a real cutting edge. His Premiership and Southern Hemisphere experience will be invaluable and he sees Doncaster as an opportunity to establish himself in the English club scene. He watched us beat Exeter at the weekend and met up with his new colleagues this week. I am sure he will settle in quickly, compete for his place, and we look forward to having him on board from mid December onwards.”

Gollins will move to the town with his Australian partner Natalie and their two children, Woody (3) and Rocco (1).
