The Knights opened the scoring after 30 minutes when Anthony Carter came into the line, took an inside pass from Mark Woodrow and beat the defence from 22 metres for the try. Conditions are claggy after heavy overnight rain. A forwards match in progress! Half time still 0-5 to the Knights.
Newbury missed a penalty early second half. Knights then won one and kicked to the corner - from ensuing maul hooker Steve Boden burrowed over for the Knights' second try. Woody's conversion fell just short.
From the restart Knights back on attack but play breaks down. But strong drive on the scrum forces ball to squirt out and prop John Rawson first to it and scores third try. Again Woody cant add the extras.
Newbury much more in the game, trying to get wide, and one occasion when they nearly did score but a knock on relieved the pressure. They were still pressing when Paul Bailey read a pass well to intercept it and sprint 70 metres to score under the posts on 68 minutes. This time Woody did convert and score now 0-22 with bonus point secured.
Newbury threw everything at the Knights in the closing stages and got some reward when full back Mal Roberts finally beat an excellent defence to score wide out. The final score was 5-22 to the Knights who move into joint fourth place with the Pirates, who have a slightly better points difference.
