Doncaster Knights v Sedgley Tigers at Castle Park on Saturday 2.00pm
It’s fifth v fifteenth at Castle Park on Saturday on a weekend when all the top teams play lower opposition so the Knights will be taking nothing for granted when they host their Lancashire opponents. Bonus point wins are becoming a necessity to keep in the top five mix at the head of the league table, and the Knights will be less than happy if they don’t bag five points against a side they beat early in the season by 48-6 away from home.
However, the Tigers have been showing considerable improvement of late and ran Coventry close last weekend. In outside half Phil Jones they have someone who can boss a game and who is one of the league’s top goal kickers, so discipline will have been one point of focus in the build up to this game.
With several players now fit again after injury and having put in strong performances in the “A” team of late, Clive Griffiths has the sort of selection headache any Coach would like to have. The big news will be the return to starting action for Canadian centre John Cannon who has been sidelined since having a hip operation in the summer. He is fit and raring to go and Griffiths has decided to pair him in the centres with Wes Davies. Brad Hunt moves to the bench.
In the pack, skipper Jason Forster is still bothered by a bruised heel and won’t start, but hopes to be fit enough to be on the bench. A late fitness test will decide, with Ryan Peacey standing by. Simon Bunting gets some rest this week, on the bench while Ngalu Tau starts at prop.
Sedgley Tigers will be without Doncaster old boy Ed Norris, who was suspended by the RFU earlier this week for a sending off; but will start Jonny Roddam at hooker and have announced former local hero Richard Senior on their bench.
The “A” XV are away at Bradford & Bingley, looking to hold onto their N2C table lead, and take a very strong side there.
The Tigers match at Castle Park – PLEASE NOTE – will have an earlier 2pm kick off which will be the same for the three home games in December.
Guests at the game will be the Australian Schools Rugby League team, resident this week at High Melton preparing to take on Great Britain 18s at Castle Park on Sunday (2pm).
