Doncaster Knights v London Welsh on Saturday 2.30pm
The Knights plan to get back to winning ways on Saturday when one of Clive Griffiths old clubs, London Welsh, come visiting Castle Park. Griffiths was head coach at Old Deer Park for 3 seasons in the late nineties and enjoyed considerable success at what he describes as “a fantastic club with fantastic people running it”. Whilst friendships aplenty will be renewed in the bars after the game, Griffiths has his squad clearly focused on a game plan that will use the Castle Park playing area to maximum effect after two weeks restriction in the rain and mud. Terry Matterson, head coach of the Castleford Tigers Rugby League club, has been the latest guest coach invited by Griffiths to add extra dimension to the Knights’ back play this week as the players are challenged to develop their skills further.
Griffiths will be without stalwart prop Simon Bunting for a month, following his torn chest muscle at Bedford. Steve Barretto is recalled from his loan spell at Otley, having had a month of first team action to sharpen him up after his long injury absence. Griffiths will not release his starting line up until weather conditions are clearer, but will chose from a 25 man squad that has lock Jimmy Rule and prop Tom Davies added to that which traveled to Bedford last weekend. The pitch at Castle Park is perfectly playable and the game is not in any doubt. SKY Sports cameras will be covering the match for next Thursday's Rugby Club programme.
Kick off at Castle Park on Saturday is at 2.30pm; and the game will be preceded by a tasty “A” team encounter between the best “A” teams in the North and Midlands as Nottingham visit the Castle for a 1.00pm lunch time curtain raiser.
Knights squad: Carter, Davies, Hunt, Davey, Cannon, Van Vuuren, Gollings, Woodrow, Jones, Scully, Tau, Rawson, Barretto, Davies, Phillips, Boden, Gross, Rule, Kenworthy, Cook D, Grainger, Cook O, Forster, Earnshaw, Talei.
