Biggest yet TAG Rugby Tournament at Castle Park 4th July
32 Doncaster area junior schools competed in arguably the biggest TAG Rugby Festival ever in the North of England on Wednesday (4th July) at Castle Park.
Some schools entered more than one team so the total number of kids playing on the day will approach 450.
Boys and girls from years 5 and 6 (10 and 11 year olds) occupied ten pitches from noon onwards with Cup, Shield and Plate competitions ensuring everyone played many matches.
TAG Rugby is a form of the Game for youngsters that focuses on running and handling skills. Instead of tackling opponents, ball possession is won by pulling belt TAGS off the ball carrier.
The event, sponsored this year by Yazoo, is run by the Doncaster Knights Rugby Development Officer Ali Wood, with support from the Knights senior squad who were in attendance.
Ali said “the scale of the tournament this time is awesome. As our Community Programme reaches more and more schools in the area, the interest in TAG Rugby grows and grows. Kids of this age are genuinely interested in our exercise and healthy life style programmes that the Knights’ Community Charity DIRECT delivers. It wasa wonderful sight to see Castle Park swamped by so many young people enjoying themselves.”
The later rounds' results of the Cup, Shield and Plate Competitions are shown on the COMMUNITY RUGBY pages (Education) on this website. The picture shows the Bawtry Mayflower group who won the main Cup.
