Coventry v Doncaster Knights on Saturday 3pm
The new league season gets under way on Saturday when the Knights travel to Coventry. It will be Lynn Howells’ first game in charge as new Director of Rugby although he won’t be seeing Coventry for the first time – he and Justin Bishop were there last weekend to watch their opponents overcome Ebbw Vale with a strong second half performance in a pre season friendly.
The Knights did the double over Coventry last season with a 29-13 home win followed by a 24-14 win at the Butts Park Arena, where Donovan Van Vuuren scored a hat trick. Coventry are traditionally hard to beat on their home turf. Over the summer they have had a high player turnover, with no fewer than 11 of last year’s squad departing and 15 new faces arriving. The Knights will be hoping to exploit any lack of cohesion that might be evident from so many changes.
Howells first Knights team selection includes only two of the new signings, Justin Bishop and Antoine Nicoud – with Scott Gray and Sean Tomes on the bench. Scott Young and Mark Soden will travel with the team as reserves on the day. Wes Davies gets the nod at full back, and the half back partnership that so impressed after half time at Leeds – Cerith Rees and Antoine Nicoud – gets a chance to develop further.
Those not starting at Coventry will feature in a strong “A” team on Monday night at Castle Park when Northampton Saints are the visitors. Kick off is 7.30pm. The team should be posted on the website on Saturday evening.
