Knights sign Tongan World Cup prop Toma Toke

Director of Rugby Lynn Howells has moved quickly to sign up Toma Toke, a 22 year old Tongan prop who was being eyed up by a number of clubs around the world in both Union and League after impressing in the 2007 Pacific Nations Cup and as a replacement in Tonga’s World Cup matches against USA and Samoa.

Weighing in at 108kg, standing 1.81m and born in Ha’ateiho, Tonga, he has been capped by Tonga seven times.

He joins fellow Tongan Ngalu Tau at Castle Park, and knowing of the legendary Tau was part of the attraction of a move to Doncaster when several other options were open to him. Tau played an important part in making arrangements for the younger player to come to Doncaster.

Howells said that “our front row squad needs younger blood and the game we want to play needs mobile, explosive, ball carrying forwards who can contribute all round the park. Toma certainly will do all of that. He will quickly become a big favourite at Castle Park and make an impact in National Division One. Signing a player of this quality and potential also shows how serious we are at Doncaster about moving into the higher echelons of English rugby. It is an important part of our plan going forward.”

Apart from his travels with the Tongan international team, it will be his first experience of living outside his native country. After an arduous journey that involved stops in Fiji, New Zealand and Hong Kong the Tongan arrived in the UK last Friday and began training with the Knights today (Tuesday).
