Doncaster open their first campaign in Division One with a tough ask against the fully professional Pirates, who have changed their name from Penzance to reflect their ambition of taking a Cornish side into the Premiership next season. Harlequins will have something to say about that, of course, but there’s no doubt that after a fourth placed finish last season, only their second at this level, the Pirates are expected to contest the top end of the table next April.
Doncaster will hope to catch them off guard after the long trip north and won’t lack support at Castle Park, but they will have to do without skipper and ace goal kicker Rob Liley who injured an ankle last weekend in a pre season match at Sale Sharks. Also unavailable for selection due to injury are first choice backs Donavan Van Vuuren, Luke Nabaro and Joe van der Berg; and in the pack former Penzance flanker Ryan Peacey is also short of fitness. The Pirates, on the contrary, are able to list a strong line up led by former Wales star Lee Jarvis at ten.
Pieter Muller tests his squad strength by starting eight of last season’s players, including ex Colt James Rothwell who has shone in the pre season games on the left wing. Lenny Lane gets the nod over Charlie Harrison at scrum half (and will captain the side) and Liley’s role at ten is taken by Rotherham recruit Jon Benson.
Doncaster:
Boden, Rothwell, Hunt, Murray, Wood, Benson, Lane, Bunting, Roddam, Baretto, Kenworthy, D. Cook, Earnshaw, Grainger, O. Cook.
Bench: List, Tau, Plevey, Norris, Montagu, Harrison, Deakin.
Referee: Gareth Copsey (RFU).
