Last Thursday’s Doncaster Star, carried a story entitled “Woodrow’s Shock Knights Exit”. We can confirm that the five players mentioned – Mark Woodrow, Brad Hunt, Ollie Cook, Tom Luke and Ben Phillips – will not be playing for the Knights next season.
We would also like to comment on the above story. Both Woody and Brad, through their agent, were offered contracts for next season despite how the article read. Their agent held out for more money for them, even though we had offered an improved deal to the best of our ability. We gave their agent a deadline for an answer, but no deal could be reached within that timescale, so we had to move on.
Replacements for both Woody and Brad have been signed and their names will be announced once the publication date has been agreed with them.
We have been criticised for not announcing these players’ departures before it appeared in the press but, as we have pointed out in the past, we only do this when requested by the player. This is to give them better bargaining power when trying to find an alternative club. The article that appeared in the Star was prepared by one or more of the players mentioned and was sent direct to the newspaper. We were given a copy a few days earlier and asked to put it on our website which we declined to do until after the London Welsh game.
We can now also announce that Paul Bailey, Scott Plevey, Jon Rawson, Simon Bunting and Dave Scully will also not be with the Knights next season and that Lisiate Fa’aoso will be leaving at the end of the month when his work permit expires. We wish all of the players mentioned good luck with their new clubs whoever they may be.
It is our players – old and new – who are important and we will continue to work to this policy. The fact that we are not keeping some players does not mean that we will not do whatever we can to try to help them find another club.
