Dragons tour Poland
20.05.2008

Posnania

While many of us were at Twickenham watching Phoenix recently, DRFC Dragons were broadening their cultural horizons and promoting our wonderful game in the Polish city of Poznan. Not surprisingly the 38 gentlemen in attendance had a fantastic time, even managing to see the lighter side of getting a real thumping on the pitch. Apparently somewhere in the pre tour communications the word “veterans” seemed to have been lost and our chaps found themselves playing against one of Poland’s premier clubs at open age. Rugby in Poland is much stronger than many might expect and though we're told the Dragons held their own for the first hour in the forwards, the Posnania backs were much younger, fitter and faster which proved decisive. A huge pitch, a sweltering 25°c and a couple of light ales the night before probably didn’t help the Dragons cause.

Despite this the Captain, Dave Thomas, said “the whole experience was hugely successful and we had a very good time indeed. The welcome we received and the efforts made by the administrators at Posnania Rugby Club was first class. The IRB employ a very enthusiastic rugby development officer at Posnania and his help was invaluable. To have media coverage both locally and nationally was a bit of a shock but demonstrates the progress the game is making in Poland. Hopefully this will open a positive dialogue between Doncaster RFC and our Polish counterparts and while the standard of rugby these guys showed has some way to develop to match the Knights, they would be a very competitive fixture for the A team or Phoenix. This could be an opportunity for our club as a whole to promote a very positive relationship with the Polish community in the town. The logistics are easy with direct flights from Doncaster and the possibilities for mini-junior exchanges should be explored.”

We have obtained some photos for you to peruse which will give a flavour of how things went for the four day trip. Unfortunatelly we have been unsuccessful trying to coerce some of the more interesting stories out of the Captain; though Dave says he has “many a tail to tell” he is observing the rule that “what goes on tour - stays on tour”.
