Andy " The Demolition Man" Bowes became one of the first members to remove his seat from the soon to be demolished West Stand at Castle Park. Accompanied by " The Senior Brothers" Noel and David Andy made sure he removed the seat he paid £60 for seat number 39 when the stand was erected in 1985.
It was agreed at the Club SGM that kicked off the new stand development that those members who owned the seats could take them, as a memory of some great times.
Talking to Noel Senior on the day, we managed to find out that the £120 he spent on two seats, for his wife and himself, was actually earmarked for some new Ski boots and a new pair of Ski's, highlighting how much you could buy for your £60 in those days when these people commited the money to the club.
In the 23 years since the £60 was spent Castle Park has seen some milestones, promotion after promotion and visits by Martin Johnson and Rory Underwood are just examples. League games against Northampton Saints and Harlequins and the residence of the Yorkshire Cup are further indicators of how far the club has come in this short time.
For a final resting place, seat number 39 could do much worse than Andy's back garden. Seat number 39 has a lot of tales to tell, it has seen a lot of rugby, and now it goes on to a much more sedate pace of life as a garden chair.
