Another success story from the Knights Academy setup is prop Lewis Thiede, as Lynn Howells announced today the confirmation of his promotion to first team status. “ I’m proud to give this young man an opportunity, which he has earnt through his performances” the nights Director of rugby commented.
17 year old Lewis has played at Castle Park for 10 years, all the way through the Mini Junior setup. Coached predominantly by Tom Blair, he has gone from the under 7’s all the way through to captaining the Under 15’s, 16’s and 17’s and being one of the stronger Academy players.
“It all started to click for me when I was 10 rugby wise, we played in a tournament in Nottingham and although we didn’t do particularly well we began to gel as a team” Lewis commented on his time in the Mini Juniors. “We may not have been winners, but from then I knew I wanted to be a rugby player and it became more than a weekend hobby”.
Lewis progressed to play at South Yorkshire level, impressively starting every game since he was 15 for the side, but his one disappointment was Yorkshire.
“In a way it spurred me on every time I was turned down for Yorkshire. I wanted it so bad I trained harder and harder with every disappointment” Thiede confided in us “Steve Salvin spotted something in me the coaches at Yorkshire didn’t, and now I have a first team deal unlike a lot of the players they selected before me.”
The young Prop is now training alongside the likes of Tongan International Ngalu Tau and Michael Cusack, of whom he is a big fan.
“Just watching Cusack squatting 245kg in training and knowing he is an ex Knights junior as well gives me something to aim for” Lewis enthused. “I want to be as good as Cusack when I’m his age, the fact he has returned to the club from Leeds Carnegie shows you the strength of the current Knights squad.”
