Knights v the HGV
10.08.2008

TESCO

On the pitch the forwards of the Doncaster Knights first team have a reputation for dominance of a game. Known as a tough pack to play against, they have pushed back some of the biggest players in the league week in week out during the season.

But what would happen if the Knights forward line came up against a laden Heavy Goods Vehicle?

Angie Quinn of TESCO Distribution asked the question. Knights players Steve Boden, Simon Grainger, Tom Davies, Michael Cusack and Richard List offered to provide the answer.

Sixteen tons of laden HGV against five Knights forwards, accompanied by Castle Park staff member Lee Blagden, it was no competition really.

Having only just returned from a week’s camp with the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment the lads were feeling on top form, and with Simon Grainger calling the shots the Knights set themselves for their biggest opposition to date.

Knights Hooker Steve Boden gave us this quote “We had been told it was only eight tons, so decided we’d give the rest of the lads the afternoon off and tackle it ourselves. When we saw the weighbridge slip at 16060kg, I started to think we might have been a bit overconfident.”

After a quick team talk, Knights flanker Simon Grainger decided he hadn’t disturbed his Sunday just to look at a wagon. The players took up the rope and tested themselves against the biggest TESCO had to offer.

After a slow starts the six Knights heaved the truck into movement, eventually setting a decent pace as they completed the 20m challenge with ease. Not satisfied with that the players then entered the planned Tug-of-War competition, being narrowly defeated by an ever growing team of local children who seemed to have the measure of the tiring rugby squad.

All of this was for a great cause, as Middlebank Sports and Social work hard to support the Marie Curie cancer appeal. Doncaster Knights are also planning a fundraising day alongside TESCO staff at Castle Park, when the Knights take on Coventry at home on October 11th. TESCO employees can look forward to some fantastic ticket offers to watch the Knights take on a group of smaller but ultimately more challenging opponents.

The Knights are finally back in action on Sunday 17th of August when they take on Premiership side Worcester Warriors at Castle Park, look out for free ticket offers when you pre book a Carvery or meal for that date. Welsh Premiership side Llanelli visit Castle Park on Saturday 23rd August, with free tickets available for pre booked pre match meals.

National League One rugby Action finally returns to Castle Park on Saturday the 30th of August when the Knights take on newly promoted Otley in the first Yorkshire Derby of the season.
