HOWELLS MAKES CHANGES FOR KNIGHTS VISIT TO LEAGUE LEADERS LEEDS

For their match away against unbeaten league leaders Leeds Carnegie at Headingley on Saturday, Doncaster’s Director of Rugby Lynn Howells makes four changes from the team that easily beat struggling Sedgley Park last weekend.

Doncaster Knights change both their props with Richard List returning in place of Tongan international Toma Toke, who suffered a serious knee injury last weekend, and Tonga’s most capped prop Ngalu Ta’u starting in place of former Leeds player, and ex-Doncaster youth star, Michael Cusack. In the backs former Leeds winger Chris Hughes will be looking to do well against his old club after replacing Donavan Van Vuuren whilst Chris Hallam gets the nod at scrum half over Jamie Albinson.

Knights previous two encounters with Leeds were two seasons ago and they lost both matches in spite of being in the lead after 50 minutes on each occasion. At Headingley, the Knights were leading by 18 points to 11 when “the key moment in the game occurred. Leeds had overkicked a long ball, which ran dead, and presented the Knights with an attacking scrum in the Tykes half. With the left side loaded, quick ball in that direction saw an overlap with space but Paul Bailey’s “scoring” pass to Van Vuuren was laboured, Richard Welding intercepted it, and ran 80 metres unopposed for the simplest of tries that Hinton converted.” At home the Knights were leading by 13 points to 9 and “the lead should have been extended a minute later as Gollings’ tackle forced a holding on penalty but he himself then missed the 38 metre kick. The Tykes riposte was swift, though, as a rapid backs move saw Jonny Hepworth straighten the line to make room for a scoring pass to Richard Welding on his outside. Hinton converted the wide kick and the Knights’ lead had lasted just five minutes.”. Here’s hoping that we get ourselves in the same position as on both of these occasions, and as indeed we did against Pirates only two weeks ago, but with the difference being that this time that we press on to win!
