DRFC Falcons make a Flying Start in the Cup
Doncaster RFC under 11s had their first taste of competitive rugby when Doncaster RFC hosted the South Yorkshire Festival last Sunday here at Castle Park. Victories over both Sheffield Tigers and Sheffield has propelled them into the knockout stages of the prestigious Yorkshire Cup.
All 17 members of the squad made telling contributions firstly in the 21-7 victory over Sheffield Tigers. A combination of aggression up front and open running rugby in the backs gave them a 21-0 lead at the half way stage. Two tries from the strong running centre Will Burden plus one from 'Triple H' (Hard Hitting Henderson )from close quarters made all the difference. The extras were added by fly half James White and centres Euan Sterling and Will Burden. Victory was never in doubt as they eased off in the second half to allow The Tigers a consolation at the end of the match.
Sheffield were next up who again suffered at the hands of the free running Falcons. Two tries in the first five minutes plus a couple of spilt chances settled everyones nerves. Will B produced a solo 30m effort to score under the posts followed by 'man of the match' Ross (pocket battleship) Bingham who sprinted ( and I mean sprinted ) 25m down the left hand touch line to score. ( Not bad for a prop !! ) Sterlo and Whitey converted to make the score 14-0 at half time.
Tired legs allowed The Abbeydale Club back into the game . Their number 10 ( the most exciting runner on the park ) scored and converted to make it 14-7. The pressure was on as Sheffield pressed hard in the closing stages. An outstanding defensive display from everyone concerned saved the day for 'The High Flying Falcons '..... much to the parents relief !!
Congratulations to them all.
' The celebrations continued on late into the night !!!!!! '
