Pertemps Bees v Doncaster
For the final match of their first season in National One, Doncaster travel into the midst of high controversy on Saturday to play the league’s bottom side.
The Bees played three unregistered players last weekend due to injuries amongst their squad, with the knowledge and approval of the league organiser, and pulled off a shock 5 point away win at Newbury. They have subsequently had that result overturned and the match declared a 0-0 scoreline but with 4 league points awarded to Newbury under RFU Regulations. Understandably, they are unhappy with the outcome and word is that to fulfil this weekend’s fixture they will have to again list unregistered players. That presumably would hand Doncaster 4 points irrespective of the result but Rob Liley’s men have no intention of coming away from the Midlands with anything less than a deserved win on the day.
Already without John Cannon, Michael Wood and James Rothwell in the backs, Doncaster have new injury concerns of their own. Simon Grainger has had an operation on a knee this week, and Brad Hunt has a back strain. Both miss the game. Ryan Peacey steps in for Grainger in the back row, and the back line is rearranged with Jon Benson coming in at full back. The bench sees three home grown youngsters on duty – Tom Davies and Dan Storey have already played this season but it will be a league debut for young flanker Andrew Poskitt. One significant statistic is that John Boden will have played every match of the season, the only squad member to have done so. Kick off at Sharman’s Cross is 3pm and two supporters’ buses are running.
