Ieuan Davis from Doncaster has become the youngest ever fully qualified referee in England when he completed the RFU National Foundation Course (Part 2) aged only 11 years. He is 12 years old on 26th May.
Ieuan came to the notice of the South Yorkshire Referees Society when he started running touch for Doncaster 2nd XV a year ago. Despite his youth, he turned a lot of heads with his confident and competent performances and in conversation with the match referees he developed an ambition to become one! Over the year that followed he assiduously worked under the wing of South Yorkshire’s Referee Training Officer Kevan Crawshaw, culminating in the successful completion of his Award. Under current RFU rules Ieuan cannot referee rugby matches at older age groups than his own until reaching 16 years old. In the meantime he intends to mix playing next season for the Doncaster Under 13s and refereeing junior rugby before being let loose on the adult game when he reaches 16. He has his sights firmly set on becoming the youngest ever National Panel Referee – and who can say that won’t happen?
This remarkable young man is seen pictured at Doncaster club being presented with his RFU Certificate and Referees Shirt by Kevan Crawshaw, the local Referee Training Officer. He lives in Edenthorpe.
