Luke Gross joins Doncaster from Newcastle Falcons
The 36-year-old American second row forward has spent the last two seasons at Newcastle Falcons, making 39 Premiership and European appearances. He joined them in the summer of 2004 after a short spell at Rotherham and previously playing for Llanelli and Harlequins as well as three seasons in Italy. He was a key member of the American World Cup teams of 1999 and 2003 and in all played in a record 62 tests for The Eagles.
Gross will combine his part time playing role with a job in Doncaster, revealing: “I’m in the process of sorting a job out in the health and safety sector, which is what I am trained in from my time at college in the States, and I’m looking forward to my new challenge at Castle Park. The day-to-day training you have to do as a full-time professional was taking its toll on my body, so only training a few times a week and then playing on a weekend with Doncaster will be much better for me personally and it will benefit the team because I will be fresher on match days. I have a couple of good seasons in me yet.”
Falcons director of rugby, Rob Andrew, said: “We thank Luke for his two seasons at the club, and we wish him well in Doncaster. He is an outstanding character, a real gentleman on and off the field whose attitude has been absolutely spot-on during his time with us.”
Luke and his Welsh wife Sarah, who is a dentist, are house hunting in Doncaster and expect to be located here well before the season starts.
