Doncaster Rugby Club is entering a unique period in its 135 year history.

Over the past 19 years, since the instigation of a league system in Rugby Union, Doncaster have been promoted 8 times from humble beginnings in Yorkshire Two Division to National Division One, one step away from the Premiership, the pinnacle of English Club Rugby.

This level of success is unprecedented in Rugby Union and is a reflection of the ambition of a club that is undergoing the exciting transition to Full Time Professional Rugby.

Doncaster Rugby Club is a proud representative of an area experiencing an enormous level of investment and growth with the opening of Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, the opening of the “Hub” Doncaster’s new education centre, the opening of the new Frenchgate Centre (the first step to significant investment in Doncaster town centre) and the building of the new Lakeside Sports Complex that will support a variety of high profile professional sports.

The recognition of Doncaster Rugby Clubs’ success and support to both rugby and the community was reflected in 1998 by the award of the largest single sport grant from the National Lottery. This was used to build this magnificent facility, Castle Park opened in 2000, that supports all levels of Rugby Union from the Mini / Junior section with over 400 playing members through to the Full Time Professional 1st Team Squad and is used by local people and businesses for a variety of functions.

This club is committed to its connections with the community, reflected in the recent formation of the community programme DIRECT (Doncaster Inclusive Rugby Education and Community Trust). DIRECT, in a short period since its formation, has attracted significant investment in its programme.

A reflection of Doncaster’s success and desire to achieve even greater standards of excellence is the club decision to rebrand Doncaster Rugby Club.

Castle Park is located in our long standing home and has been a major factor in our choice.

With immediate effect the club will be known as Doncaster Knights, the Knights of Castle Park. The club motto will be “no challenge too great” and will reflect its ambition in Full Time Professional Sport and ‘Rugby for All’ and its aspirations for the charity DIRECT.
