Clive Griffiths

Knights Ready to Charge!.....

Clive Griffiths has named a strong looking line up to start the National One league campaign, and one that will feature no fewer than eight Knights’ debutants.

In Jason Forster he has a captain who has been respected as a leader of men wherever he has played, and who will ensure commitment for 80 minutes from every one of the team. His side wont lack effort but he is the first to say that a new side always needs time to gel although pre season performances have been increasingly cohesive, if upset somewhat by summer injuries. Two new faces not seen in last weekend’s win over Halifax are the former Saracens centre Paul Bailey, and Otley number eight Glen Wilson, who were both rested last weekend to start fresh against the Blues. Bailey teams up with ex bath player Spencer Davey in the centre with Wes Davies, who impressed greatly last weekend, reverting to the wing. In the pack, Wilson combines with Forster and Simon Grainger to make a formidable looking back row unit, and the combo of Newcastle Falcons and US Eagles lock Luke Gross alongside Glen Kenworthy in the second row suggests solidity at the set pieces and marauding open field play!

Not available for selection were a front row unit of Steve Barretto, B Phillips and J Rawson – all facing September in rehab – Russell Earnshaw likewise recovering from minor knee surgery, John Cannon who has a hip problem needing remedial treatment, and Donavan Van Vuuren who is still a couple of weeks away from returning after shoulder reconstruction..

The Blues have also been recruiting well over the summer under Ben Ryan, one of the League’s more astute coaches, and are led by new signing and captain Gregor Heyter whose move from Glasgow Warriors raised a few eyebrows. Tim Walsh makes his competitive debut for them at fly half and would be a dangerous goal kicker should home discipline get tested and penalties be conceded.
