Doncaster’s 1st XV Squad have been getting put through their paces for the much anticipated new season, which commences with two pre-season friendlies against premiership sides Gloucester on Friday 19th August and against Sale Sharks on Friday 26th. Director of Rugby Pieter Muller wants to see his squad in action against better sides than they will play next season to prepare them in the stiffest manner for their task ahead. Both games are on Friday evenings. The 2nd XV will then take on Pontefract 1st XV on Saturday 27th August at Moor Lane.
Newly promoted Doncaster are still looking to strengthen their squad and have a Scottish Under 21 prop from the Borders on trial training this week. This has proven necessary by the unexpected decision of David Maddocks not to move north, having been offered a full time contract with Gwent Dragons. Pieter Muller said “we will be looking at him closely this week at training”; also not yet ruling out any other signings stating “we could still strengthen the squad further in 1 or 2 positions”.
The Doncaster squad has been in training since early June with players also keeping fit playing in various 7 and 10 a side rugby competitions in destinations across Europe including the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy and last weekend’s 10s tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. Brad Hunt played in the VB 10 a side competition in Stockholm as a member of the Dutch exiles who went on the win the competition. He said that “it is great to be a part of such tournaments over the summer to keep fit and be able to play rugby in different countries almost every weekend.”
The official season kicks off on Saturday 3rd September against the Cornish pirates at Castle Park. As with all home games next season, kick off will be at 2.30pm. Plans are well advanced for a new stand to be in place by then on the east side of the ground. A new toilet block added to the main clubhouse building, and new hospitality boxes, with a new outside bar underneath, in the north east corner of the ground shopuld be ready by end September. Season tickets are still on sale at the club!!!
