London Welsh v Doncaster Knights on Saturday 3pm
Clive Griffiths returns to an old stomping ground when he takes his Knights to Old Deer Park on Saturday. He has mixed emotions about his return having enjoyed a very successful spell there in the nineties arresting the decline of the once top flight club – but his focus this weekend will be firmly on extending the Knights’ impressive start to the season.
Last season, the Knights had a 27-27 draw in London, the first away points of that season, followed by a convincing 30-11 home win later on.
The Knights will be without Simon Grainger, who pulled a hamstring last weekend; and without Jon Benson who broke his nose in the Nottingham win. Grainger’s place in the back row is taken by Russell Earnshaw, making his season’s debut after knee surgery in the summer. Earnshaw has had two “A” team outings and is raring to win his place back. Another casualty of the surgeon’s knife this summer, Donovan Van Vuuren, is also in the squad and will make his season’s first start off the bench. He too has played twice in the “A” team, scoring three tries in the process. Hooker Ben Phillips, signed in the summer from Pontypridd, also makes his first appearance, also on the bench.
Knights: Boden J, Hunt, Davey, Bailey, Davies W, Woodrow, Jones, Bunting, Boden S, Tau, Kenworthy, Gross, Earnshaw, Forster, Wilson.
Bench: List, Phillips, Davies T, Cook D, Cook O, Scully, Van Vuuren.
Referee: Ashley Rowden (RFU)
