Pertemps Bees v Doncaster Knights on Saturday 2.00pm
The Knights make the first of two consecutive visits to the Midlands on Saturday when they travel to Solihull to face the side one place below them in the league table.
The Pertemps Bees (or Birmingham & Solihull as the RFU still registers them) struggled all last season at the foot of the league but gave notice of a renewal on the opening Saturday this season with a surprise 29-29 draw away at Bedford. They subsequently beat Exeter 35-17 at home and have three away wins under their belts, but their form at home has been surprisingly weak, that Exeter win being the only one in four attempts to date. Last week they won well away at Waterloo so Clive Griffiths’ men enter something of unknown form when they travel on Saturday morning.
The Knights’ form has also not been as impressive as the squad of players suggests it should, and last week’s struggle to get a bonus point win over Otley was typical of recent weeks. It does therefore look as though the side that plays to its potential on Saturday is likely to come away with the points!
Griffiths makes one change in the backs, recalling a hopefully refocused Paul Bailey in place of Anthony Carter, who is on the bench. Wes Davies moves to full back to accommodate the switch. In the pack, late fitness tests confirm John Rawson starting at tight head prop; and Steve Boden at hooker. Russell Earnshaw regains his place at flanker with Netani Talei getting a full game in the “A” XV at Harrogate. Glen Kenworthy and Simon Grainger are back and on a bench that looks to have plenty fire power, that also includes Dan Storey.
