Morpeth 38 - Doncaster Demons 12
The Demons started the season with a fantastic performance from all players. Having made the 3 hour coach journey to Morpeth the girls seemed up for the challenge. It was close play but Morpeth sneaked a try in after some great defence from the Demons in their own 22. But the Demons came straight back when Gemma French broke away and scored the Demons first try.
Again Morpeth scored and again the Demons retaliated when Gemma French crossed the line after some well placed hand offs. Gemma went on to convert. The teams appeared equally matched and play was tough until the Morpeth girls crossed the line again. The Demons attempted a come back try when Kira took a crash ball over the line from a penalty however, she was held up and no scrummage was called with the half time whistle robbing the Demons of another first half score.
As the second half started the Demons showed fighting sprit after Liana chased down a kick down over the line but despite protests the ref called dead ball. The play was close but Morpeth scored 3 times in quick succession until a crunching tackle led to 2 Demons paying a visit to A&E and full time being called.
All in all a close match, far closer than the score reflects. Towards the end the Demons did not have the numbers to compete with the fresh legs of Morpeth. It was an excellent game to build on with tackling and rucking much improved on last season. The Demons posed a real threat away from home turf and look forward to our next match.
