The Demons made the 3 hour journey up the A1 to play the Novocastrians. The game started in monsoon conditions which seemed to put out the Demons fire- resulting in the Novo’s sliding across the line in the first 10 minutes. The Demons got a big wake up call when Novo’s crossed the line again within 5 minutes of the first try. This was like a slap in the face, the wake up call the Demons needed. After an inspirational talk from Captain Croft the Demons were ready to play rugby their way, making lots of ground by cutting lines and breaking the Novo’s defence. The Demons put their refined mauling skills into practice, pressurising the Novocastrians to give away penalties. This put the Demons in the Novo’s 22 for the remainder of the 1st half however, a late turnover meant we lost possession and let the Novo’s run in another try.
After half time the Demons got their heads together and started to play as a team, using their drift line defence to keep the Novo’s from scoring several times. The Demons got more confident at taking the ball up as Lilly Aka Laura proved many times breaking the Novo’s defence. But Novo’s came right back at the Demons and saw another 5 points on the board. This gave the Demons more fire in their bellies and hard hits were flowing. Ash put in her first dump tackle to show that the Demons weren’t going to take defeat lying down. The Demons quickly turned the game around to being in 5 meters off the Novo’s try line where the Demon’s maul went down and Psycho saw the opening for the Demons first try. This made the Demons hungry for more, the Novo’s put up a fight but because of the hard work and determination the Demons, they found themselves back in Novo’s 22. The pressure was taking its tole on the Novo’s as they gave away more penalties. Caz with a quick tap and go was taken down by an off side defence. Quick ball to the backs, and supportive play by the Demons saw Tigger power over the line for the second try. With a taste for tries Caz made a break straight through the whole pack of Novo’s and found herself isolated. As the Demons were “catching up” Caz held off the winger as much as she could but just could not manage the off load to a supporting Beanie. The game came to an end when Captain Croft took a re-coiled hand off to her nose (breaking it again) causing her blood injury.
