Match Report: Ripley v Demons 21st September 2008
The Demons kicked off their new season in a new league; North Midlands and Yorkshire National Challenge 2. The first match was away at Ripley Rhinos, Derbyshire- only one hour away, and a big difference from last season’s epic journeys. Anyway the Demons took twelve players for a twelve aside match.
To start with the Demons lost the toss and the opposition picked halves. We kicked off and a break down meant that we were able to turn over a Ripley scrum. The ball was quick out of the scrum to Psycho, who saw an opportunity to run. A quick chip and chase saw the ball bounce straight in to her hands as she dived over the line to put the first score on the board for the Demons. Unfortunately organization was not one of her strong points on the day, having been out the night before. She had to try and kick without her tee since she had left it in the changing room. As Jenny’s sister ran to try and find it captain Lara Croft stepped up to hold the ball. It was a sight to behold as Lara tried to stuff her face in the muck that little bit more to protect her face. As Psycho stepped up Lara lost her nerve and let go leaving the ball to scuttle along the grass…
It wasn’t long before the Rhinos retaliated with a try. Their forwards overpowered the Demons as they mauled over the line. The play was hard and for a while it seemed nobody would score. After a short water break the Demons managed to pull off a move from the scrum in our own 22. The move, a very smooth switch between Ash and Eggy saw Eggy side step in her own words “at least six of ‘em”. With Psycho and Beanie in support a three on one situation evolved and Psycho took a quick pop from Eggy to score just right of the posts.
Again the Rhinos retaliated quickly and scored yet another forwards try. As they tried again to push for another try the Demons were ready and managed to hold it up over the line. Unfortunately from the scrummage the Rhinos crashed over just before the half time whistle.
In the second half the Rhinos quickly put another score on the board. The Demons quickly fought back with a smooth run of hands and a loop that saw Ash break away with Eggy in hot pursuit. A well timed off load saw Eggy score left of the posts. Soon after, the Rhinos hit back to put even more points on the board. After a penalty caused by the Rhinos holding on to the ball a quick tap and pass saw Caz make an eight yard run where she was tackled. But in her own words “my lardyness took me over t’line”.
From the restart Tigger took the ball through a gap only to be high tackled by a Rhino. A quick tap and go from Caz saw Jenny advance towards the wing and popping an offload to Psycho. The ball was lost and the winger tried to sneak down the wing for a last minute try but was wiped off the field by Caz.
The final whistle saw the score at 29-20 to the Ripley Rhinos.
A fantastic game for all, everyone did the Demons proud, especially the new girls Eggy and Vicky.
