Further Information on Doncaster Phoenix:

Phoenix took on a young and tenacious Sheffield 3rd XV and progressed to the  next round with a 21-10 win an open running game in much the same conditions as the previous Saturday.

With a 10-minute delay Phoenix again opted to kick into the elements and started off strongly with the pack opting to take the ball and ruck forward ably supported with strong back forays.

With the early pressure Phoenix won a penalty with which Stewart hit the post. However from the ensuing pressure the pressure was re-applied and Phoenix opened the scoring courtesy of a rehearsed Hughes try in the centre that Stewart was successful in converting.

However with the elements in their favour Sheffield took the impetus and through their backs advanced and won a penalty which Grey converted.

Maintaining the advantage they then proceeded to take the lead with a crash ball to centre Edwards who barged under the sticks for a converted try and a 10-7 margin at half time.

With the elements now in their favour and the introduction of Douglas and Kaihau into the pack whilst dominant in the scrum the young Sheffield side thwarted and frustrated Phoenix for the first twenty and they may have sensed a win was possible.

This was soon allayed with the introduction Miller in the centre who came on and made some strong advance midfield. This compounded with the introduction of Farley at No.8 saw the home side gain territory and pressure the Sheffield gain line. From an ensuing Sheffield scrum five yards out the dominant pack pushed them off the ball with Farley receiving and going under the posts, Stewart converting.

The game was then finished with a try from Elliot on the death after the ball was turned over midfield and the fly half sprinting through the gap with Stewart again adding the points – 21-10

Next round sees Phoenix entertain Thorne at Castle Park on Wednesday 19th April, KO 6.30pm
