Saturday 19.08.06Wheatley Hills Training Game Doncaster Phoenix travelled cross-town with a mixture of 1st and 2nd team players with the 2006/7 inaugural game which saw the visitors put in a creditable performance but let themselves down with missed tackles and lesser fitness. This resulted in a resounding win on the day with Wheatley winning by the virtue of 8 tries to 2. The gist of the game was that Phoenix started lively enough and were keen to apply the impetus which resulted in a try for Ryan Roodt after 10 minutes collecting a sweet cross pitch kick courtesy of Ben Miller who also slotted the conversion. Wheatley responded with a try but Miller added a penalty two minutes later which saw the score 10 – 5 well into the second quarter. In the second half Phoenix’s second score came courtesy of Captain Burton who was kick to latch on to a dropped ball on the left wing to pick up and dart through. Plus points for Phoenix was Ben Miller who liked to play everywhere, Lee Nithsdale did well at 2 with Roger Morris a handful when he got his hands on the ball and a creditable performance from Wes Malton who stuck his hand up for a first team place if he can consistently perform at that level |
