Phoenix started the season with a closely fought encounter with Durham and Northumberland 1 side Gosforth - now headed by former Club Coach Kev Westgarth. The game was split in to 4 x 20 minutes 1st Quarter 0-0 2nd Quarter 3-0 :Penalty: Millar 3rd Quarter 10 - 0 : Try Barnes W converted by Millar 4th Quarter 10 -7 Thre first half was evenly contested with the only score coming from the boot of Ben Millar with both defences keep the try line in tact. The first quarter was held up by a serious injury to Gosforth Hooker where a ambulance had to be called for a break and dislocation. The Phoenix try came when Welsh Wizard Thomas collected deep in his own half and evaded three or four challenges to pop to the supporting Barnes who finished off with 30 yards of green field to go under the posts. Phoenix gifted Gosforth their score when trying an intricate move in fron tof their own posts for the ball to be dropped and a grateful Gosforth player on hand to scoop up and go under the posts. Gosforth thought they must have won it when the right winger was put clear with the line beckoning, however debutant Sykes was on hand to drag him down into to touch when glory beckoned. Positives for the day - Pack performed well and the with a couple of old heads on the pitch the win was secured Negatives - numerous times in the oppostion 22 we opted to kick the ball - badly! - when possesion is king. Further note to add another Gosforth player was added to injury list when he dis-embarked from the team coach at Washington services and banged his head with more stitches required. To press next weeks fixture is supposed to be Wheatley Hills but the rumour is strong that their cup game is on, so watch this space.
