In the absence of any preview of our own, here is the Bedford one!

Blues ready to do battle with Knights
Published Date: 21 November 2008 “Bedford Today”
Boulton, Walsh, Davey and Tupai all set to start

The Bedford Blues face an almightly tussle this weekend when they travel up M1 to face Doncaster Knights in a fifth versus sixth encounter.

With a bit of history between the two side following an off-the-field incident in the same fixture last season and a 30-man brawl in an earlier game, director of rugby Mike Rayer is expecting a full-blooded affair when the teams hit the field.

Rayer said: "Last weekend against Plymouth we had an excellent first half which was rounded off with a good try and then in the second half we pushed on and ran away with it.

"Doncaster will be different as they will be very physical in the forwards and as a result we have split the bench five to two to make sure we have plenty of support among the forwards."

The Blues have only a couple of injury problems in the lead up to this fixture with Greg Sammons missing out due to a knee ligament problems.

Karl Dickson is fit to feature in the 22, while Brad Davies plays a game for Northampton Wanderers on Friday afternoon to get some game time under his belt. Ben Pienaar (back) and Phil Hoy (shoulder) are all still on the sidelines.

Rayer makes four changes from the starting line-up against Plymouth last weekend with Phil Boulton replacing James Graham at tighthead prop, Sam Walsh coming in for Marco Cecere at loosehead, Paul Tupai starting at number eight and Ian Davey replacing Ryan Owen on the wing.

Will Chudley, Brett Daynes, James Knight and Duncan Taylor will all be featuring in a development game at Goldington Road against a Cambridge University side.

Blues: Sam Walsh, Dan Richmond (C), Phil Boulton, Mike Howard, James Cannon, Mouritz Botha, Sacha Harding, Paul Tupai, Nick Walshe, Billy Twelvetrees, Ian Davey, Liam Roberts, Brendan Burke, Ollie Dodge, Will Harries. Replacements: Chris Locke, James Graham, Marco Cecere, Gregor Gillanders, Rory McKay, Karl Dickson, Ian Vass

Allan.

You may not have noticed, but it is absent because Jamie Crawford writes it for the programme on home games.

What about the people who are playing elsewhere so do not have access to a programme, but still like to peruse Mr Crawford's synopsis?

I asked Jamie to write it for the programme, so blame me.

I made that decision.

Bad decision, mate! We need every body we can to attend games and the preview should whet those appetites and get folk excited. You need one preview on the website, which has been so quiet all week that you wouldn't know there was a home game on, and something else in the match day programme. We need to SELL these home games, as well as answering the need of those who wont be able to be there but who feel included in the whole process.

I think I understood already that we need to sell these home games Allan. The very succesful "cashback scheme" increased physical advertising and several other campaigns that weren't run under your time working here all combine for these efforts. Things like these are repeated every week, Like the Ezine preview which is then usually transposed to the website. This is consistently repeated, and all new processes are added into a routine to be repeated pre every match.

I could bore you with a list of what happens pre match this season, and to build up over the year to increase exposure, with things such as 2m high fixture posters in the doorway of the Dome etc but its a long list Allan. It's rare I disagree with you but that was an unfair post belittling my efforts, and I believe biased statement from you.

You have noticed the website being quiet this week because it has been unusually so. A replacement server at Castle Park has meant limited access. I also haven't been as readily available due to working on building the "virtual" stand into the online ticketing system etc (some difficult jobs) and the "over success" of a few fledgling marketing ideas. " the ones who wont be there" are serviced by the Ezine, and the official website on all other weeks but this one.

If you thing all the work I do is nothing compared to one fan preview, on a Doncaster Knights message board, then I am dissapointed in you. "You would not notice a game was on looking at the official website" Would that be apart from the giant splash screen, the rotating advert or the time date and opposition standard box?

How many people do you think pass the extra "Fixture board" sites around Doncaster (4 external rather than one now), for example.

I can't see the point of this preview being exclusively in the match day programme. What benefits does this have? Is there any reason why it cannot be mutual to the forum as well?

I for one hardly ever read a match day programme but do enjoy reading Jamie's musings, something which I sadly cannot now do :(

Im bringing 70, as an example of what I've been up to this week, from one single marketing idea.

We dont meed to SELL games Allan, as that is the physical at of taking money for a ticket. What we need to to is advertise and market them.

Anything that was used on the website or Ezine , and was then repeated in the programme caused complaints.

I always use this as a litmus test, " How long before anyone notices".

It is now virtually December, and no one mentioned the absence before. This has been the way since the opening home game.
