Harlequins prop Evans Knights bound!

With pre-season beginning in just four days’ time the Knights have bolstered their front row options with the signing of loose head prop Owen Evans from Premiership heavyweights Harlequins.

Born in Cardigan in West Wales, Evans talents were identified whilst playing for Llandovery and was picked up by Pro 12 outfit Scarlets.

The 28-year-old represented Wales U20s at the 2009 Junior World Championship against Tonga, Australia and France.

In 2012 Evans switched to Newport Gwent Dragons following two seasons in Llanelli and went on to make over 60 senior appearances for the region.

Owen crossed the border ahead of the 2015/16 season and made nine senior appearances for Quins in his debut season despite huge competition the number one jersey; vying for position with the likes of England international Joe Marler.

Commenting on his latest acquisition Director of Rugby Clive Griffiths said. “Owen arrives from Harlequins where he has faced some very stiff competition for places and is keen to get more game time.

“He’s been involved with plenty of first class clubs and we are delighted to be able to secure his services.

“It shows how highly Doncaster Knights are regarded within the sport and he will strengthen us in the loosehead position.

“He is a talented scrummager, a very strong defender and can get around the park and be a nuisance at the breakdown also.”

Owen will join up with his new teammates on Monday, a prospect he is relishing. “I’m looking forward to starting my new venture with a very successful Club, looks like a great set up at Doncaster and I’m very excited to be apart of it.”

Academy recruit more talent as pre-season nears.

Doncaster Knights Academy seem poised for landmark campaign as more talented youngsters commit to the programme.

Having enjoyed a hugely successful debut campaign in the British Universities & Colleges league structure last season, lifting the Northern Conference Plate, the Academy are now looking to build and are assembling an impressive squad of talent.

With several members of the squad earmarked to begin pre-season training with the Knights next Monday (June 19th) Head Coach Ants Posa explains how he is encouraged that word of the project is spreading. “Our presence is starting to grow beyond the Doncaster zone which is really encouraging.

“Whilst we are desperate to develop as much home grown talent as possible, ultimately we want to produce top quality players who could go on to play professionally for the Knights one day.

“One of our biggest challenges in the past two seasons has been getting the word out about what we are doing here so we are delighted the message is beginning to spread.

Having already acquired some exciting new additions this summer Posa, who also coaches Doncaster Phoenix, is happy to announce that there has been more joy on the recruitment front with three more prospects now signed up.  “Another three boys have committed to us in the last couple of days.

“Elliot Adamson is joining us from Pocklington School and arrives having played County rugby all the way through and has also represented The Lambs this season which is an invitational team made up from the best talents within the Independent School system.

“He’s a stand off but also capable in several positions across the backline and was in the Leicester Tigers Academy at a younger age. I think he will do nothing but excel in our academy environment.

“Another new arrival for 2017/18 is Fraser Leiper at hooker.

“It is a position we are quite healthy in already with Will Holling and Alex Keeton but it gives us some fantastic depth up front as well as another arrival in Stylianos Theoklitou-Panagiotou; or Stel.

“Stel is a Donny boy but is Cypriot qualified through is parents and has been capped 23 times with Cyprus.

“He featured regularly for Phoenix last season and is a very strong scrummager who I believe we will see real progress from as a result of full time rugby.

“We’ve got twenty players returning from last season with over twenty new applications from quality players meaning that we are starting to build some real strength in depth.”

New season new challenge for Doncaster Phoenix.

Following their debut campaign in the National Leagues in 2016/17 Doncaster Phoenix will be looking to build this term but in a new competition.

Having pulled off a remarkable late run of results to avoid relegation last season, Castle Park’s non-professional playing arm will now compete in National Three Midlands following a reshuffle.

With pre-season due to start early next month Head Coach Ants Posa assesses the challenges that lay in wait for his charges. “Firstly, I think what we achieved at the end of last season with such a young and inexperience squad was incredible, it really was the great escape and it is right up there with any of the other achievements I’ve had as a coach.

“Due to being the most southerly team in National Three North we been transferred to National Three Midlands for the new season.

“I don’t have the same background knowledge of the sides like I do in the North from my time with both Phoenix and Beverley in that division. The North looks extremely tough again but I very much doubt anything will be any easier in the Midlands.

“Ironically, the transfer has produced a local derby for us despite not coming up against any Yorkshire teams as we will face Scunthorpe which will be one we really look forward to.”

The Phoenix has seen plenty of change and growth with three promotions in the last five seasons but Ants claims that next season will be more about consolidating with the squad they have than major recruitment from elsewhere.  “It is a really exciting time for us and we have retained the vast majority of the squad from last season without really bringing in new faces from outside.

“We will benefit from some of the talented young lads who are joining the Academy who will compete for Phoenix also.

“It will be a very young team again and it will be another learning curve but we’re a year more experienced and Sam Bottomley has already done a lot of off season work in terms of our fitness and conditioning.

“There are a lot of guys already putting in the work in before pre-season has begun, building strong foundations that are sure to benefit us once September rolls around.”

Doncaster Phoenix begin pre-season training on July 3rd at Hills Lane playing fields, between Leger Way and Armthorpe Road, continuing every Monday & Thursday from 6.45pm as well as Saturday mornings at 10.30am.

All players, over 17 years old, are very welcome to come along join regardless of ability with three sides regularly playing throughout the season.
