Hooker Ben Sugars arrives at Castle Park

Doncaster Knights are delighted to announce the signing of hooker, Ben Sugars ahead of the new season.

Born in Leeds, Sugars returns to Yorkshire after building an impressive and varied rugby résumé that has taken him from the Champ to Super Rugby in Australia, and MLR. During his younger years Sugars represented Yorkshire county, Yorkshire Carnegie and Leeds Tykes.

Sugars developed through the University of Nottingham. Originally a back-row forward, he made the transition to hooker during his university years, developing into a dynamic front-rower who combines mobility around the field with a strong defensive foundation.

In 2023, Sugars made the move to Australia, joining Randwick and playing a key role in the club’s successful Shute Shield title-winning campaign. His performances caught the attention of the NSW Waratahs, earning him an opportunity in Super Rugby Pacific, where he made his debut during the 2024 season.

Ahead of the 2025 Major League Rugby campaign, Sugars signed with Rugby Football Club Los Angeles (RFCLA). He featured in all 15 matches during the season, starting 11, and crossed for two tries. His durability, work rate, and consistency in the front row saw him earn two MLR Team of the Week selections.

Most recently, Sugars has continued his strong form with California Redwoods, scoring four tries in seven appearances and further showcasing his effectiveness both in open play and around the set-piece.

Now returning to England, Sugars brings valuable experience from multiple rugby environments, adding quality, athleticism, and depth to the Knights’ front row as the club prepares for the season ahead.

Head of Recruitment Matt Harland said:

“When we learned that Ben was available, he was a player we were very keen to bring back to Yorkshire. Having previous experience in Super Rugby, Major League Rugby, and the Championship with Nottingham, Ben brings a wealth of experience to the squad. He is a player whose attributes fit perfectly with the club’s style of play.”

Ben said:

“I’m excited to be joining Doncaster and looking forward to the challenge ahead. Moving back to Yorkshire is a special opportunity for me, and I’m looking forward to being part of a great rugby community.”
