Griff adds international flare to half backs

Tongan international Tomasi Palu signs for the Knights ahead of league opener with Plymouth.

With just three days to go until the Knights kick off their 2014/15 Greene King IPA Championship season, DoR Clive Griffiths has strengthened his half back choices with the addition of scrum-half Tomasi Palu. The 27-year-old number nine has represented Tonga on ten occasions including two appearances in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, one of which was Tonga’s shock victory over France.

Having learnt his trade in New Zealand at Wellington College Tomasi went on to represent the province of Wellington in 2008 but it was in 2013 where he really made his mark for the Lions. Palu played a huge role Wellington’s successful 2013 ITM Cup campaign aiding them to a Premier division topping regular season before losing out narrowly to Canterbury in the final. Whilst playing predominantly at scum-half, Tomasi is also capable at stand off and has an accomplished kicking game to go with his passing abilities.

Tomasi has the 2015 World Cup clearly in his sights and feels joining the Knights is the perfect way to give himself the chance of being involved. Tomasi went on record to say ‘This is a great opportunity to join the Doncaster Knights and it will give me the best chance to make sure I am involved in the World cup set up. I’m grateful and thankful to Griff for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to pull on the Knights jersey!’

Griff had this to say about the Knight latest addition to the squad, ‘I first came across Tomasi in the 2011 World Cup, where my Canadian side beat the Tongan side 25-20. He is undoubtedly a quality international player and he adds some much needed experience to our younger half backs. I just hope he moves quicker on the pitch than he did through customs last week when I picked him up from the airport. But in all seriousness I’m excited about having Tomasi join the squad.’
