James Mitchell makes Knights switch.

Doncaster Knights are delighted to announce the signing of scrum half James Mitchell from Northampton Saints for the 2020/21 season.

The 25-year-old arrives from Franklin’s Gardens on a one-year deal and with an impressive CV of top flight experience.

James made eight appearances for Saints in 2019/20, featuring in the Champions Cup and Premiership for the Black, Green and Gold after signing from Connacht in September last year.

Mitchell spent two seasons in the West of Ireland, where he made 26 appearances and scored two tries.

Head Coach Steve Boden believes he brings great blend of skills and experience to his half back options. “James comes with a wealth of experience despite his young age having played first grade rugby at Northampton, Connacht & Sale.

“He has an excellent skillset, he is strong and succinct communicator and has the ability to keep the game at a high tempo.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how James integrates as a Knight and drives competition in a key position with Sam [Pocklington] Reiss [Cullen].”

Before moving to Connacht in 2017, James played for three seasons with Sale Sharks.

His first-team debut for the Sharks came aged just 19 in an LV Cup game against Worcester and he went on to play 20 times for the Premiership giants.

Mitchell represented England at Under-16, U17 and U18 level before being selected in the 2015 U20 6 Nations Squad. He played in all five games in that competition and subsequently went on to feature in all five games at the U20 World Championship in Italy.

The No.9 also captained Sale Sharks’ side during the 2015 Premiership Rugby 7s but is now focused on making his mark at Castle Park. “After speaking to Steve Boden about Doncaster and where he wants the club to go next season it was an easy decision for me to sign.

“I feel like Doncaster will be a great place to play rugby next year and the style of rugby we are looking to play suits me and my game.

“I’m really excited to play for a club with such potential and hopefully I can become a real asset for the Knights. I’d also like to thank the Doncaster Board for being very supportive during this uncertain time.”

James’ signing along with the announcement of Mark Best’s arrival at the weekend takes the 2020/21 squad to fifteen. We have a host of rewards, including your 2020/21 Season Ticket on our Crowdfunder page – check them out.
