Match day Rewind | Knights vs Richmond 2008
1st May 2020
This week’s match day rewind comes from 2008 with the Knights taking on Richmond in round four of the 2008 EDF National Trophy.
For those of you with short memories the EDF National Trophy ran from 2006 to 2009 and was competed by the top 118 Clubs of the Rugby Football Union from National Division One and below.
The 2007/08 edition was the trophy’s penultimate season as it was replaced by the British & Irish Cup for 2009/10.
Included in the competition that year were the likes of Exeter Chiefs and Northampton Saints and in round four Donny faced a Richmond side that sat top of London Division One going into the tie.
Director of Rugby Lynn Howells made nine changes to the team that had recorded an 18-27 win away at Esher the week before.
In the backs Wes Davies came in at full-back, Scott Young (recalled from his loan spell with Waterloo) played at outside centre in only his second 1st XV start of the season and Donavan Van Vuuren returned on the wing.
Upfront Howells handed a first start of the season to lock for Luke Gross who had been injured in the USA’s warm up session prior to their World Cup match with England. Ben Phillips made a welcome return from injury at hooker alongside Richard List and Jon Rawson.
With Matt Cox away with the England Under 20 squad and James Jones cup-tied Tom Luke, normally a centre, lined up at open side flanker.
