Flanker Ryan Joins From Rivals Ealing

The Knights are pleased to announce their latest signing of the summer ahead of the 2018/19 season as Willie Ryan has signed from rivals Ealing Trailfinders on a one year-deal.

The flanker joins having helped Ealing to a second-place finish in the Championship last season and will now add to the Knights similar position hopes.

The 27-year-old spoke of delight to have signed for the Knights. “I’m excited to be at Doncaster for the upcoming season and eager to get going and hopefully I help the club push up the table.”

“It is a new challenge and one I’m very much looking forward too with a good club with good fans.”

The Irish born player started his career at Cork Constitution and UCC (University College Cork) Rugby. Before making the short move overseas to Rotherham Titans. At the Clifton Lane outfit, Ryan made 30 appearances over two seasons helping the side to consecutive fourth placed Championship finishes.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, the back-row moved to Ealing Trailfinders scoring three tries in his debut season.

He is also the older brother of John Ryan, who has played over 100 games for PRO14 side Munster and is currently on tour in Australia with Ireland.

The forward becomes the third signing of the summer and Knights boss Clive Griffiths spoke of his excitement at the ability Ryan can bring to Castle Park.

“There is a wealth of talent down at Ealing nowadays with numerous back rows so we went in with a mass and grab.”

“He has the ability to play 8, 6 and is a real tough player, who will make the opposition defences take note of him and attackers be wary of him.”

Griffiths also complimented the type of player Ryan is. “No-nonsense, no quarter given, I remember him playing against us at Rotherham and he showed how tough he was.”
