Francis Cummins has returned to Castle Park as Backs & Skills Coach after signing a deal until the end of the season.
The 42-year-old first joined the club for the 2016/17 season, after previously holding the position of Head Coach with Bradford Bulls and Assistant Coach of Leeds Rhinos prior to his venture into Rugby Union.
Francis arrives back with the Knights after being the Assistant Coach at Super League outfit Widnes for a season.
The new Doncaster coach made over 350 appearances for Leeds Rhinos during an illustrious career that also saw him play for Great Britain, England & Ireland and will now look to help the Knights for the 2019/20 season.
The former Rugby League player was pleased to be back at Castle Park as he enjoyed his previous spell as a coach at the club.
“I had a good time here and was relatively successful as well and I have fond memories of Doncaster, Clive is still in place. I enjoyed my time here before and I thought it was a good fit once again.
My positive experience last time I was here definitely persuaded me to join again, if you go somewhere and don’t have a good time then maybe that is a bit difficult but I enjoyed my time here and I thought we made some good strides and the opportunity came to join again and I happily accepted.”
Francis only began his role late last week, but has been impressed with the squad and set up at Castle Park.
“There has been a lot of change and improvements since I was last here with the facilities, obviously with the playing squad that is here it was tough last season, but I think factors are back in place that the club can be back challenging for the top four again because there is a good squad and there is a good coaching staff in place as well as the support for the coaching staff, so I think we are in a lot stronger position then before and we have a group that is working hard and has all the ingredients to do well.”
Director of Rugby Clive Griffiths was delighted to welcome Francis back to his coaching staff.
"I am in a state of deja vu right now but still delighted to have Francis Cummins back at Castle Park after his eventful time at Widnes RLFC!
That experience will certainly make him stronger in the years ahead and we are very fortunate with the timing of his availability. Franny has already rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in with the backs and team sessions and I anticipate him making a big impact again at Castle Park in 2019-20 due to the undoubted knowledge he has amassed from his involvement in both rugby codes.
We have, what I now believe to be, a very strong coaching group and we are all determined to right a few wrongs this season!"
