Following the announcement earlier today that Vili Veikoso will be returning for the 2015/16 season we are delighted to reveal another front row addition as prop forward Joe Sproston signs from Ampthill.
23-year-old Joe has been playing for the Bedfordshire based outfit since 2010/11 and played a big part in their impressive recent success. Having achieved two promotions in the last three seasons, Ampthill will spend 2014/15 in National Division One; aided by a try from Sproston in their promotion play off victory over Bishop Stortford.
Joe developed a fierce reputation within National Two North as a powerful, ball-carrying prop with an eye for the try line, in twenty appearances he touched down nine times in 2014/15. Standing at 6’3” and weighing 135 KG Sproston is capable on either side of the scrum and has even played at number eight and Clive is glad to have secured his services, stating. “I know a lot about Joe from my work with Ampthill.
“He’s a big unit of a man but very mobile and difficult to stop. He’s a bit of a wildcard and probably needs a full time environment to realise his full potential.
“He knows he’s got a lot of works to do and has come here to prove himself.
In terms of his progress as a full time professional rugby player, he’s putting all his eggs in one basket and hoping he wont smash them.
“He can cover one and three, he can also cover number eight which shows what he can do away from the set piece and it provides us with another potential option.
“It’s going to be a big ask for him, he’s worked his way through the leagues, but fingers crossed he can flourish here at Castle Park."
With just a weekend to go before pre-season kicks off Joe knows it’s going to be a huge summer for him but is relishing the challenge.
“It’s very exciting for me, coming from National Two and making the step up and I’m really looking forward to the test of full time rugby.
“Hopefully I can push myself forward. I’m sure pre-season will be tough and I’ve never done it in a full time environment before but that is something that excites me and something I’ve been looking forward to throughout the discussions with Clive and the Club.
“I’ve kept in touch with Clive over the seasons as I’ve worked with him previously so I know all about his drive and the ambition of the club. The facilities are fantastic; I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in to it."
