Steve Boden | Pre-season update.

As freedom day dawns the Knights are back at Castle Park, taking the first steps for what promises to be a fascinating 2021/22 Championship campaign.

With promotion to the Premiership guaranteed for the league winner and discussions around broadcasting and new formats ongoing it promises to be season not to miss as we count down to September.

The 2020/21 campaign was a huge success for Steve Boden’s Knights, as the newly formed side swept all but Saracens and Ealing Trailfinders aside to finish third in the league.

Sadly, off the field, we had no fans to join us in celebrating the Club’s best Championship finish in half a decade. With any luck 2021/22 will be back to normal and we can celebrate last minute winners, bemoan questionable decisions from Sir and get behind the boys like we used to.

For now, Bodes and his coaching side have constructed a new squad ready to build on last season’s heroics and are very much enjoying being at Castle Park doing what they love.  “The lads are going really well, they’re probably in the toughest part of pre-season now as we are in the middle of a four-week block.

“They’ve been eased back into it but we are ramping it up and there are a couple of jaded bodies which is to be expected. Next week we have another big push before the lads will get a 7-9-day recovery block.

“During this time they will do some home programming and take a break mentally before coming back ready to roll into the next block.

“They have gelled really well so far, with the restrictions looser now than last year they are able to do a bit more socially. I’ve been really impressed with the work ethic and intensity so far & you can tell there has been a bit of bond formed already.”

Though the country is unlocking, England Rugby regulations remain in place in relation to elite sport which means organizing fixtures outside formal competition is a little tricky currently, however, plans for pre-season fixtures are well underway. “Everything is fluid due to the Covid regulations but we have agreed in principle to play Rotherham Titans at Castle Park on Friday evening, August 13th.

“The RFU guidelines will need to be satisfied before we can confirm, with Rotherham not being in our league it presents a few challenges around testing players and staff but hopefully that will go ahead.

“We are also looking to have a couple of in house training days against other sides then on September 4thwe are hoping to travel to Kingston Park and face Newcastle Falcons which will be a hell of a test for us.”
